Description

Black PEI coated flexible spring steel sheets are the next generation in 3D printing platforms, providing optimal adhesion for a wide variety of materials as well as the flex-ability for quick and easy part removal once printing has finished.

The PEI coating eliminates the need for old fashion, messy and time consuming first layer adhesion strategies such as:

  • glue sticks
  • hairspray
  • kapton tape

The PEI powdercoating layer on the spring steel flex plate becomes sticky to 3D printed materials when hot (at your regular printing temperatures) and self releases printed parts when cool. On many occasions your parts will literally pop off the plate once cool – all on their own!

If they don’t, just flex the plate to remove them.

PEI coated spring steel plates work straight out of the box with many 3D printing materials including, but not limited to:

  • ABS
  • PLA
  • PETG
  • TPU
  • Polycarbonate
  • Carbon fibre blends
  • and others

Some engineering grade materials like nylons will require a 3D printing adhesive such as Vision Miner Nano Polymer Adhesive to ensure parts adhere to the flexplate.

Cleaning:

If a loss of first layer adhesion is occuring, a wet wipe with IPA with paper towel or lint free cloth will remove dust / dirt / debris / fingerprint oils and restore adhesion. We do this ourselves and recommend a wipe with IPA after every print to ensure optimal and consistent first layer adhesion on every print.

Do not use acetone to clean the flexplate.

Flex plate magnets:

Our PEI powdercoated spring steel flex plates are supplied on their own. They do not come with a magnetic sheet included.

In our experience many of the magnets bundled with PEI coated flex plates have been subpar and will demonstrate a significant loss in magnetism over time – especially when repeatedly printing with materials that require a high bed temperature such as ABS.

The side effect of a magnetic sheet losing it’s magnetism is that a part being printed in a material that is prone to warping (such as nylons and some ABS blends) – will start to lift the flex plate off of the magnet during printing and result in a poor quality or failed print.

This is why we specifically sourced and offer Graviflex – a high temperature, high quality magnetic sheet that is rated to sustain full magnetism at a continuous operating temperature of upto 120c.

Caution – Configure and set your first layer carefully! :

  • Incorrectly set offsets and first layers that are too close can result in printed parts adhering too much. If care is not taken during the printed part removal process, the PEI coating layer can come off with the 3D printed part.
  • The risk of printed parts adhering too much and damaging the PEI coating is magnified with materials such as PETG / PCTG / TPU
  • If offsets are even further misconfigured or a nozzle crash/drag occurs , you will damage the PEI powder coating of the flex plate.

Amazing sheets, I exclusively use these now on all 3 of my machines.

Finally black PEI sheets! I hate the stock gold ones sold with most kits. This is my aesthetic. Oh and yeah it is a damn good sheet – heavy steel compared to my China plates, so it really bonds well to the bed magnet. And it has really nice adhesion and a finer texture than other sheets which gives a really nice finish

After 100’s of hours of printing between my machines, I’ve found these to be fantastic sheets that stick like glue when hot and release when cold. The fine texture gives a nice surface finish on the printed parts and the thicker steel gives that bit of extra stick to the magnet and helps prevent larger parts from warping and lifting the plates. Overall, very happy and will definitely be getting more in the down the track!

Pretty good. Was a bit of an idiot and crashed my nozzle into it pretty hard, but it wasn’t worse for wear.

Beautiful quality plate. thicker than your average plate, uniform application of PEI. This is a single sided sheet. You may think you want a double sided sheet but you do not. The lack of coating on the underside means that your magnet has a better chance of holding it down – more magnetism because it’s closer to the bed – and before you think I’m crazy “It’s only a few microns” because of the inverse square law it absolutely makes a difference. That combined with the thicker steel means you have a much higher chance of fighting off those warpy filaments.
